The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board has approved a supply scheme intended to add capacity for the city’s eastern districts, where rationing has operated on a four-day cycle since the spring.
Board papers put the additional daily supply at a level that would cover a substantial share of the current shortfall in the affected union councils, though not all of it. Officials acknowledged that distribution losses, not production, account for much of the gap.
Residents’ associations in the affected areas have been sceptical of similar announcements before. Three previous schemes were approved and partially funded without reaching completion, a point raised during the board session itself.
The approval covers design and procurement. Construction timelines were not part of this week’s decision.
